Unconventional Data Backup
July 3rd, 2009
I’m needing to use unconventional methods in order to perform a data backup for a customer’s laptop – the laptop in question is currently sitting on one of my worktables. It has already shut down on me 3 times when I attempted previous backups over the last hour. I ordered a laptop cooling mat for my customer which will be available sometime tomorrow morning, since the previous shutdowns are due to heat-related issues.
Why not just pull out the drive and attach it using a universal drive to USB connector, then you can back it up at will, even if the computer won’t boot. This is supposing they’re not using Bitlocker or some other form of drive encryption. I use a device like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812226001) so that I can recover data even off of drives that don’t boot.
