OS Zealots
It never ceases to amaze me just how many “OS Zealots” there are whether they be Windows Zealots, Mac Zealots, or Linux Zealots.
As someone who regularly uses Windows XP, Vista, 7, 2003, and 2008; Mac OS X Leopard, Knoppix, and Ubuntu Linux 8.10 and 9.04 I have learned there are both advantages and disadvantages with any Operating System. My question to all the “OS Zealots” is, “When all is said and done, does it really matter who has the better Operating System? If you really like the OS you are using and think it’s wonderful, that’s fine, just don’t look down your nose at people who don’t happen to share your opinion.
Comparison of Safari 4 and Firefox 3.0.9
I recently compared Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 and this is what I learned:
(This comparison was performed on a Pentium Dual Core, 2.5 Gigahertz, Vista 32-Bit machine with 2 Gigabytes of RAM.)
The Safari 4 Beta installer package was 26.1 Megabytes in size and took 2 minutes, 25 seconds to completely install while the Firefox 3.0.9 installer package was 7.4 Megabytes in size and took 1 minute, 4 seconds to install. So that I could test the time each broswer took to load a webpage (the ISP used was Comcast), I chose www.cnn.com as the test website: Safari 4 Beta took 2.5 seconds to load the test website while Firefox 3.0.9 took 4.34 seconds to load the test website.
Both Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 come with integrated RSS functionality, which people who like to follow news stories should find useful. Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 also support the use of tabbed browsing, which is quite a popular feature in today’s web browsers. One difference between Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 is that, in Safari 4 Beta, the Menu Bar is turned off by default requiring users to manually turn it on if they want to use it – the Menu Bar is turned on by default in Firefox 3.0.9. Another difference between Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 is that, while Safari 4 Beta includes a toolbar with links to “popular” websites (youtube, flickr, wikipedia, etc), the toolbar in Firefox 3.0.9 includes very few links to other websites.
Another difference between Safari 4 Beta and Firefox 3.0.9 is how the two browsers report bugs – Safari 4 Beta includes a “Report bugs to Apple” button that can be accessed at anytime while, in Firefox 3.0.9, the Mozilla Crash Assistant will be activated only after Firefox 3.0.9 has crashed. There are two features, however, that Firefox 3.0.9 has that Safari 4 Beta does not: When you close the Firefox 3.0.9 window, you are prompted as to whether or not you want to save your open tabs so that, when you reopen Firefox 3.0.9 , your tabs will automatically reopen – in my opinion, this is a very useful feature and I am surprised that Safari 4 Beta does not have this. The other feature that Firefox 3.0.9 has that is lacking in Safari 4 Beta is the ability to download extensions and themes to customize your browsing experience.
After comparing the two browsers side-by-side and seeing the features of each browser, I came to the following conclusion:
Safari 4 Beta is more aesthetically pleasing and, out of the box, gives a more streamlined user experience that is not kludgey. Firefox 3.0.9 offers a more customizable browsing experience that Power Users will certainly appreciate.
